Planned Maintenance Notification

Some major electrical work is being carried out in the Block that contains  IDC (Invermay Data Centre).

Friday  27 December 07:00 - Sunday 29 December 18:00

The electrical supply pillar boxes are being replaced. This is an example of one below.191227_1.jpgExisting Pillar Box "You've served us well..."

There are two pillar boxes which serve the Block. Supply will be off to IDC as the first pillar box is replaced. During this time the generator will be running to supply essential power. IDC is protected on this supply.
The second pillar is being replaced in a neighbouring area on the 30th and 31st.

Order of events

  • Friday 27 Work on Pillar Box commences
  • Supply be be disconnected, IDC will fail over to Generator
  • Generator will be monitored throughout
  • Sometime later (we'll let you know) Pillar Box replacement will complete
  • Supply will return and the power to IDC will move back

Mr Generator was recently given its annual check - all good. In fact a run for a couple of days will be good for it rather than the maybe an hour each month. There is plenty of diesel onsite. It's AgResearch with tractors and things roaming about the place. The generator can be refueled while running.

As Friday proceeds we will post updates here. We will be monitoring operations and will confirm fuel consumption so as to plan refueling overnight. We will keep you posted here.

The Murphy Factor

The recent flood event showed facilities based in Christchurch could serve those who could reach them. Over the next couple of days some additional steps are being taken behind the scenes in preparation. Staff will be both onsite and available on call should any issues develop.

Check back here for updates.

So, How'd it go?

Well the great news is our services were not interrupted. As work got underway it was discovered that supply to IDC had been previously isolated from the pillar boxes being maintained. So work took place and we were not affected.

it was a good exercise as this additional knowledge has been noted. Plus we had been further building our processes in the run-up to this work being done. As work proceeded some other aspects were also found. Knowledge is a wonderful thing, so we are better and better prepared for it.
