Service Event - Wednesday 2 March 1340 - 1355

So far:- Around 1340 Network connectivity was lost. The outage appeared to last about 15 minutes then services returned. We know that core services, uplinks and handovers out to the rest of the Internet all broke. This points to a major event upstream with multiple providers and services affected.

1530 Update  Services appear to have returned as far as we can see. We are aware the outage was widespread across the whole country, affecting multiple providers and services. An investigation into the root cause is still underway.

We will add to this once we know more.

7 March This is more a wrap-up than debrief on events. We have not received any complete incident reports.

The following is speculation based on observations we have been able to make; from what we can see an outage occurred most likely at 'peering' level somewhere within a larger/major peering exchange in New Zealand. This cut off a large number of connections. The Internet itself has a healing mechanism to bypass the failed area. How successful this is depends on design and setup carried out ahead of time. As the outage event was worked on, services restored. Once the peering pathway became available again, network traffic would have rerouted accordingly.

We will note this in our IDC Events page and update it if further information or an outcome comes to hand.
